A somber vigil and protest took place in Mesa this week, as demonstrators gathered to demand justice for Daniel Shaver, the unarmed man who was shot and killed by police in 2016 in one of the most controversial law enforcement killings in recent U.S. history.
The powerful display included a large sign bearing Daniel’s image and the words of his final plea:
“PLEASE DON’T SHOOT.”

📍 The Case That Still Haunts Arizona
Daniel Shaver, a 26-year-old father and husband, was staying at a Mesa hotel in January 2016 when police were called over reports of someone with a rifle seen near a window. Shaver, who worked in pest control, had a pellet gun for his job—legally owned and stored in his hotel room.
Responding officers confronted Shaver in a hallway. According to widely criticized bodycam footage, Shaver was crying, unarmed, and attempting to comply with shouted and conflicting commands from police. As he crawled forward, begging, “Please don’t shoot me,” he was shot five times with an AR-15 rifle by Officer Philip Brailsford.
⚖️ Officer Acquitted, but Outrage Continues
Brailsford was fired from the Mesa Police Department, then acquitted of second-degree murder charges in 2017. Despite his firing, he was quietly rehired by the department for a brief period in 2018—reportedly so he could claim a medical retirement and receive over $30,000 annually in pension benefits, citing PTSD from the shooting.
One protester called it “a betrayal of public trust” and said,
